Setting Sail Warmly Amid Wind and Snow: North Toronto TCML Adult Mandarin Courses Begin

On January 6, 2026, Toronto’s night sky was filled with heavy snow and icy pellets, and the cold was biting. Yet inside the Tzu Chi North Toronto office, the atmosphere was brimming with warmth and anticipation. Seeing the first cohort of students brave the wind and snow to arrive on time for the opening ceremony of the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML), I felt deeply moved and gratified. This is not only the start of a course, but also a significant milestone for the Tzu Chi Academy, North Toronto, marking our formal entry into adult Mandarin education after years of deep community engagement.

Learning Has No Age Limit: Bringing Mandarin into Mainstream Society

I have always believed that “Learning has no age limit.” The original intention behind establishing TCML was precisely to respond to the growing demand for Mandarin learning in the local mainstream society. Unlike traditional overseas Chinese schools that primarily focuses on children, TCML centers on the needs of adult learners. Whether for workplace communication, travel exchanges, family interaction, or simply a love for Taiwanese culture, we hope that through a three-month course, students will truly be able to use Mandarin in their daily lives.

On the opening night, Director Bo-Ching Lan and Deputy Director Tsai-Feng Hsu of the Culture Centre of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Toronto, were present to kick off the program. Director Lan noted that TCML is an initiative promoted by Taiwan’s Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) and is dedicated to sharing with the world a Mandarin learning model that integrates the values of openness, inclusiveness, and democracy. He also explained TCML’s four core visions:

  • High-Quality Adult Mandarin Instruction: Designed specifically for busy working professionals, focusing not just on language acquisition but on understanding Taiwan’s creative culture and modern society.
  • Communication and Practicality: Moving beyond rote memorization of grammar, focusing on language that is genuinely useful in daily life and the workplace.
  • Authentic Taiwan Materials: Using teaching materials rich in Taiwanese cultural and humanistic spirit, bringing language learning close to real-life stories.
  • Building Cross-Cultural Bridges: Providing a non-political, open, and friendly learning platform within Canada’s multicultural background to enhance students’ global competitiveness.

Director Lan and Deputy Director Hsu also presented Taiwan-themed calendars and Year of the Horse lanterns as gifts, symbolizing cultural blessings from Taiwan and lighting a warm beginning for the class on this cold winter night.

Embracing Diversity and Sharing “Gratitude, Respect, and Love”

When planning the curriculum for this term, I specifically reminded our team to foster a friendly, equal, and secure learning environment. On campus we continue to promote the ideas of “Gender Equality Begins with You and Me” and “Embracing Diversity and Respecting Difference,” so that every student can learn with ease.

The students come from diverse backgrounds—local Canadians, Indonesians, and even Africans—and include office workers, university students, and skilled professionals. Such diversity truly reflects Tzu Chi’s advocacy of “Gratitude, Respect, and Love.”

This term’s courses are taught by two senior Mandarin instructors, Ms. An-Chi Cheng and Ms. Shu-Fang Huang (teaching Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons, respectively). Utilizing the “Let’s Learn Mandarin” textbooks published by the OCAC, we employ small class sizes of under ten students and interactive teaching methods, allowing language learning to occur naturally in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

Looking Ahead: Becoming a Bridge Across Cultures

2026 is set to be a busy and fulfilling year for us, as the TCML has already planned three terms of courses for the entire year. Building on the steady rollout of beginner-level classes, we will gradually develop professional Mandarin courses geared toward mainstream society, allowing the vitality of Taiwan Mandarin to take root more deeply in Canada’s multicultural soil.

My heartfelt thanks to the students for their trust and to the teaching team for their dedication. TCML is not only a language learning center—it is also a bridge connecting Taiwan’s humanistic aesthetics with everyday life in Canada.

We cordially invite friends interested in Mandarin to join our learning journey—are you ready?
