On February 13, 2026, Tzu Chi Vancouver hosted its inaugural “Pro-D Day Children’s Camp.” Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the planning team, 32 dedicated volunteers accompanied 14 students for a holiday filled with laughter and cultural enrichment.
The camp centered on the theme of “Lunar New Year Cultural Exploration,” guiding children through the colorful world of traditions via three engaging stages:
1. Storytelling with Shadow Puppets: Teacher Jia-Wen Lai vividly narrated the legends of the 12 Zodiac animals. Many children were fascinated to discover their own zodiac signs for the first time. They then crafted their own shadow puppets and practiced lines under the teacher’s guidance, preparing for a performance later in the day.
2. Hands-on Culinary Fun: Teacher Ya-Ting Hsu led the children in becoming little chefs. They made their own pizza lunch and experienced the tradition of rolling sticky rice balls (Tangyuan) and making steamed sponge cakes (Fagao). The children beamed with satisfaction as they tasted the delicious pizza made with their own hands.
3. Calligraphy for the New Year: Teacher Xin Chen introduced the origins of the Chinese New Year and festive foods. She guided the children in using calligraphy brushes to write creative couplets for the Year of the Horse, as well as auspicious characters like “Spring” and “Blessing.” For many, it was their first calligraphy experience, and they excitedly prepared to take their masterpieces home to show their parents.
The event concluded with a collaborative shadow puppet show performed by the students, filling the room with joy and laughter. As teachers, students, and volunteers exchanged wishes of “Happy New Year,” this culturally rich and joyful Pro-D Day camp came to a perfect close, leaving everyone with cherished memories.
