Summer Solstice Warmth: Food Distribution at Oppenheimer Park

On June 21, the first day of summer, despite a sudden rise in Vancouver’s temperatures, the heat did not deter Tzu Chi volunteers. Thirty-two volunteers of all ages gathered at the Tzu Chi Foundation Canada to prepare 376 delicious vegetarian sandwiches for people experiencing homelessness in Oppenheimer Park.

From preparation to distribution, every detail reflected Master Cheng Yen’s teachings of “Gratitude, Respect, and Love.” Senior volunteers guided the younger ones, reminding them to serve with both hands and a warm smile. A video about child refugees helped the children appreciate the peace and blessings in their own lives. In addition to sandwiches, volunteers thoughtfully prepared iced milk tea to provide relief from the heat. The children, remembering their instructions, served politely and proactively assisted those with mobility challenges.

This monthly distribution not only brings warmth and care to people experiencing homelessness but also allows volunteers, especially the younger generation, to learn and grow through giving. This intergenerational love stands as the most beautiful expression of the Tzu Chi family.
