Tzu Chi Collegiate Association

By Sprouting Bodhi Seeds We Will Soar with Love and Hope

The Tzu Chi Collegiate Youth Association was formed by a group of aspiring College or University students (a.k.a. Tzu Ching) in Taiwan, and is currently established globally. When the association was first formed, Master Cheng Yen had three points of advice for the members: first, do Tzu Chi’s work during spare time; second, cultivate a heart of compassion for people; third, learn to get along with different types of people.

The future of world development depends on the values and directions of our modern youth, and college is an important stage of professional and personality development for them. The ideals and ambitions of these university students and their grasp of humanistic values will have considerable impact on the roles they play in the future. With their spirit of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and selfless giving, and the goal of nurturing the next generation, the Tzu Chi Collegiate Youth Associations around the world gather local tertiary students to take part in various Tzu Ching activities and serve the needy in society. These youths have also led many more of their university/college peers to unleash their youthful enthusiasm and work for the greater good of humanity.

About Tzu Chi Collegiate Association in Canada

In 1993, several members of the Tzu Chi Collegiate Association (TCCA) returned to Taiwan for a training camp, which inspired them to establish a TCCA chapter in Toronto the following year. Formed in 1995 through the efforts of five dedicated members, the Toronto TCCA engaged young people aged 17 to 30 in community service, revitalizing Tzu Chi and inspiring youth to become compassionate philanthropists.

In 2000, the University of Toronto TCCA officially became a club, promoting the philosophy of Dharma Master Cheng Yen and integrating Buddhist teachings into everyday life to foster compassion. This initiative increased student participation in Tzu Chi’s missions, enhancing both professional skills and humanistic values.

Guided by the motto “TCCA: Compassion, Wisdom, Action; Connecting to Cultivate Wisdom,” the club engages in activities such as volunteering at service centers, environmental cleanups, tree planting, and spiritual development, providing students with practical wisdom beyond academics.
